The Miracle Worker, adapted for the stage by William Gibson, is based on the true story of Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan. Blind and deaf after suffering a terrible fever as a baby, young Helen Keller spent years unable to communicate, leaving her frustrated and occasionally violent. As a last chance before she was institutionalized, her parents contact a school for the blind, which sends half-blind Annie Sullivan to teach Helen. Helen is initially resistant, but Annie gradually forms a bond with her. Through Annie and Helen’s relationship we learn that the human spirit can triumph over even the most daunting of disabilities and how a dedicated teacher can transform lives.
